Naumkeag

Naumkeag is a beautiful estate in Massachusetts that was inherited by Miss Mabel Choate in 1929. She lived on the property for a few summers and eventually bequeathed the estate to The Trustees of Reservations, who opened the property to the public in 1959. Today, more than 11,000 people visit the estate each year. A 35-minute guided tour is required before entering the gardens, but visitors may also wander the grounds at their own pace. This amazing destination is located at 5 Prospect Hill Rd, Stockbridge, MA 01262.

Naumkeag is a historic estate that is worth visiting. It's one of the few remaining gilded-age "cottages" in the Berkshires, and boasts eight acres of terraced gardens and forty acres of woodland, meadow, and pasture. The home was designed by Nathan Barrett in the late 1880s, and was later renovated by Fletcher Steele and Mabel Choate. The house was later designated a National Historic Landmark, a designation given to historic places that are considered to be nationally significant. Learn more here.

The landscaped grounds at Naumkeag are a showcase of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century landscape design. The gardens were first designed by Nathan Franklin Barrett in the late 1880s and were redesigned by Fletcher Steele between 1926 and 1956. During this time, Steele added the Afternoon Garden, Blue Steps, and the Chinese Garden.

Steele's work at Naumkeag continued to mold the landscape to his artistic vision, and he was particularly concerned with spatial composition and the sense of the garden as a three-dimensional entity. His South Lawn, for example, incorporated contemporary sculpture and reflected the undulations of distant mountain landscapes. This innovative approach was a step forward for landscape design in America and revolutionized the practice.

After the Barretts inherited the estate, they sought outside inspiration for the landscape. They traveled to China in 1934 and brought back objects from the country. Choate urged Steele to design a Chinese garden and suggested that he consider using these objects as inspiration for the new design. The result was an artful garden that showcased the Barretts' unique aesthetic sense.
