Monument Mountain Reservation

The Monument Mountain Reservation is a 503-acre open space area located in Great Barrington, MA 01230. It is centered on the subordinate summit of Peeskawso Peak, a 1,642-foot mountain. It offers numerous hiking and mountain biking trails and is a great place to get outdoors with family and friends.

The Monument Mountain Reservation is located in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. It has over twelve miles of hiking trails and views of the Berkshires. The reservation also includes a playground and picnic area. A great place to spend the day outdoors, this park is also easily accessible by car, bus, or train.

Monument Mountain was sacred to the Mohican Indians, who left a stone monument on the peak. In the 1930s, the area became heavily logged to support the charcoal industry in the local towns of Lenox and Falls Village. In 1899, Helen C. Butler and John Butler Swann bought the reservation.

Located in Great Barrington, Monument Mountain Reservation is a fantastic place to go hiking or skiing. The park offers lush plantations, majestic mountains, and a variety of outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Beartown State Forest and Catamount Aerial Adventure Park. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, this is the perfect place. Learn more about Great Barrington here.

The first landowners on Monument Mountain were Native Americans. But a prominent New York attorney's daughter purchased the lands for the Trustees of Reservations. The Trustees of Reservations later turned them into parklands. The park is one of the largest in the country and has some spectacular views. It also features a beautiful lake with numerous hiking trails.

The trail to Big Rock Falls begins as a hike through the forest and around large quartzite boulders. The trail then follows a stream and leads up to a small waterfall. During the hike, you'll encounter a wide variety of interesting rock formations. The stream can be tricky if it has recently rained, but it was fine when we visited in late February.

For those looking for more challenging terrain, Monument Mountain has an impressive trail system. Two main trails reach the summit: the Hickey Trail and the Indian Monument Trail. The Hickey Trail begins at the north end of the parking area and leads up beside the seasonal waterfall. The Indian Monument Trail gradually works its way up the western slopes, merging with the Hickey Trail just below the summit.

A group of 42 concerned citizens formed the Greylock Park Association in 1885. This organization purchased 400 acres around the summit. In 1898, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a law creating the state park. It was one of the first state parks in the Commonwealth. The park is a popular recreational area for locals and visitors alike.
